What you're chasing

Six fish worth flying for.

Costa Rica's Pacific coast holds one of the densest billfish populations anywhere. Here is what is running, and when.

Sailfish

December – April (peak)

The signature fish of this coast. Multiple shots a day is normal in season. Released, always.

Blue & Black Marlin

September – November (peak)

The reason serious anglers plan a year out. Blues run through the offshore banks; blacks show bigger and rarer.

Yellowfin Tuna

Year-round, strongest May – September

Found under spinner dolphin. Hard, fast, and the best eating fish on the boat.

Dorado (Mahi-Mahi)

Year-round, strongest May – October

Fast, acrobatic and bright as a traffic light. The most reliable fish we catch.

Roosterfish

Year-round, peak May – September

Inshore, close to the rocks, on live bait. Pound for pound the hardest pull in Costa Rica.

Wahoo & Cubera Snapper

Seasonal, opportunistic

Wahoo on the troll, cubera on the structure. Neither is a target — both are a very good day.

The number you are quoted is the number you pay. This is the full list of what is in it on a full-day offshore charter.

  • Licensed captain and experienced first mate
  • All rods, reels, tackle, lures and live bait
  • Costa Rican fishing licences for every angler
  • Fuel for the full run offshore
  • Bottled water, soft drinks, local beer and ice
  • Lunch and fresh fruit prepared aboard
  • Photos of your catch, sent the same evening
  • Your catch cleaned, bagged and ready to take to a restaurant

  • — Crew gratuity (customary 15–20%)
  • — Hotel transfers (we can arrange these)

Deposit & cancellation

30% deposit confirms the date. Balance is due on the day of the charter, at the dock. Free cancellation up to 14 days before departure. Inside 14 days the deposit is held as credit toward a future date within 12 months. Trips we cancel for weather or mechanical reasons are refunded in full, no exceptions.

Before you book

The questions we actually get asked.

Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes, and it is included. Costa Rica requires a licence for every angler aboard. We buy them for your whole party and hand them to you at the dock — you do not need to organise anything in advance.
What is the best month to fish Costa Rica?
It depends what you want. Sailfish peak December through April and it is not unusual to raise ten or more fish in a day. Blue marlin peak September through November. Dorado, tuna and roosterfish are close to year-round. There is no dead month on this coast — tell us when you can travel and we will tell you honestly what you are likely to catch.
Do we keep the fish?
Billfish — marlin and sailfish — are always released. That is not negotiable and it is the reason this fishery is still good. Dorado, tuna and wahoo you are welcome to keep; we clean, bag and ice your catch, and most restaurants in town will cook it for you that evening. Anything you do not want goes home with the crew.
What if I get seasick?
Take medication the night before and again an hour before departure — not when you start feeling it, which is too late. If you are genuinely worried, book the inshore trip or ask us about the catamaran; both stay in far calmer water. Nobody on our crew will make you feel bad about it.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the captain calls the trip for weather or mechanical reasons, you are refunded in full. No credit note, no argument. We would rather lose a booking than put you on the water in conditions we would not take our own families out in.
Can non-anglers come along?
Yes, and they often do. There is shade, seating and a head on every boat. The half-day and inshore trips work best for mixed groups — a full day offshore is a long time to be aboard if you are not fishing.
How many people can fish at once?
Six anglers is the practical maximum on our offshore boats and four on the inshore boat. That is not a capacity limit, it is a fishing limit — put eight rods in the water and you spend the day untangling lines instead of catching fish.
