They don't all fish the same.

Papagayo is the calm, deep-water base closest to Liberia. Flamingo is the working fishing marina. Golfito, far to the south, is where the trip is about the fishing. Same fleet standard at all three.

Deep water, calm bay, forty minutes from the airport.

Marina Papagayo sits inside Bahía Culebra, which means protected water on the days the rest of the coast is lumpy, and a deep-water basin that takes boats most Costa Rican marinas cannot. It is the shortest run from an international arrival at Liberia to a line in the water or a drink on the foredeck, and it is where our catamarans and larger yachts are happiest.

Guanacaste

Guanacaste's working sportfishing marina.

Flamingo has been the fishing marina of the north Pacific for as long as anyone has been fishing it commercially, and the rebuilt marina put proper infrastructure back under it. The offshore grounds are a manageable run, the inshore rock structure holds roosterfish and cubera, and the beaches either side make it an easy base for a group where only half the party wants to fish.

Golfito

Golfito, Golfo Dulce

The serious end of the coast.

Golfito is where people go when the fishing is the reason for the trip. The Golfo Dulce drops to real depth close in, the offshore grounds off the Osa hold billfish through most of the year, and the inshore structure produces roosterfish and cubera snapper that would be the fish of the trip anywhere else. It is remote, it takes an extra flight, and that is exactly why it still fishes the way it does.
